The following list features six of my favourite night walks in Tokyo. They cover different parts of the city and offer a great mixture of quiet parks, beautifully illuminated buildings and bridges, impressive skyline views, iconic landmarks such as Tokyo Tower, and much more. Enjoy my recommendations and follow me on these hidden paths through the city.

1Sumida River and Sensoji Temple in Asakusa
I began my walk along the Sumida River, facing the iconic Asahi Group Headquarters in Asakusa, near the Tokyo Skytree. Keep an eye out for a building topped with a massive golden flame sculpture. The concrete path you’ll follow is the Sumida River Terrace, a beautiful way to explore large parts of central Tokyo. The atmosphere at night is truly special, with neon lights illuminating both old and new buildings, historic bridges, parks, and ships passing by. I usually cross the river after about an hour and walk back along the other side, finishing with a visit to the famous Sensoji Temple and its beautiful nighttime illumination. Find out more >
2Rainbow Bridge and Odaiba in Minato Ward
Crossing the Rainbow Bridge at night with the skyline of Tokyo in the background was one of my personal highlights. Keep in mind that the opening hours are 9:00 am - 9:00 pm from April to October (last entry at 8:30 pm). From November to March, you can cross the bridge between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm (last entry at 5:30 pm). Start your walk from the artificial island Odaiba with a visit to Daiba Park and head over the bridge, which takes roughly 30 minutes. Find out more >
3Hamamatsucho Station, Zojo-ji Temple, Tokyo Tower and Roppongi in Minato Ward
One of my favourite night walks in Tokyo begins at Hamamatsucho Station, served by the Yamanote Line and located in the Minato Ward. From there, the walk takes you past some of the city's most impressive illuminated sights. Head towards Zojo-ji Temple from the station and enjoy a stunning view of Tokyo Tower rising directly behind it. Continue towards Tokyo Tower and then walk west to Roppongi, a vibrant area perfect for exploring after dark. The walk is approximately 3 to 4 kilometres and takes around 50 to 60 minutes without breaks. For a more relaxed experience, allow at least 2 hours or closer to 3 hours, especially if you want to spend some time at Zojo-ji Temple, Tokyo Tower and Roppongi. Find out more >
4Omotesando, Harajuku, Meiji Shrine and Shibuya
Another favourite evening walk in Tokyo starts in Omotesando and takes you through Harajuku, Meiji Shrine, and finally to the vibrant neon lights of Shibuya. For the best experience, begin in the late afternoon as Meiji Shrine closes around sunset and is inaccessible after dark. Stroll along Omotesando towards Harajuku and visit the shrine before heading south towards Shibuya. The full route is approximately four kilometres and takes about an hour without breaks. Allow at least two to three hours for the walk to comfortably explore Omotesando and Harajuku, enjoy the peaceful grounds of Meiji Shrine, Meiji Jingu Inner Garden, and conclude your evening at the iconic Shibuya Crossing, surrounded by the bright neon-lights of Tokyo’s bustling district. 5Amekyo Market, Ueno, Ueno Park and University of Tokyo
Another unforgettable night walk in Tokyo begins at the lively Ameyoko Market (Ameya Yokocho) in Ueno. Start by exploring the narrow shopping streets beneath and around the railway tracks before continuing towards Ueno and Ueno Park. In the evening, the park becomes much quieter and offers a completely different atmosphere from the busy streets around Ueno Station. From there, continue west towards the famous University of Tokyo and its historic Hongo Campus. The complete route is roughly 3 kilometres and takes around 45 minutes without stops. I recommend allowing 2 to 3 hours for the entire walk, giving you enough time to explore Ameyoko Market, stroll through Ueno Park, and finish the evening around the University of Tokyo. 6Shinjuku and Hanazono Shrine (Hanazono-jinja)
A night walk through Shinjuku during the Christmas season is my favourite way to experience Tokyo after dark. Begin at Shinjuku Station and explore the vibrant streets and entertainment districts. Many department stores and public spaces are decorated with colourful illuminations. Continue to Hanazono Shrine (Hanazono-jinja) for a peaceful contrast to the neon lights and bustling atmosphere. The route is about 2 to 3 kilometres and takes around 40 to 60 minutes without stops. Allow about 2 hours to enjoy the illuminations, lively streets, and atmosphere of Shinjuku at night.
