Hiroshima City has a population of over one million. It is known as the City of Water, with its six rivers running through a densely populated area. The feudal lord Mori Terumoto (1553 - 1623) built Hiroshima Castle in 1589. This was the origin of the city. On the 6th of August in 1945, the first atomic bomb in the history of mankind was dropped on Hiroshima, killing more than 140,000 people. Everything within a radius of two kilometres was destroyed. In memory of this tragedy, more than one million people come here every year to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
